Post subject: SIL Toolbox Questions

Hey there,

I'm wondering if anyone here has any personal experience with the "Field Linguist's Toolbox," released and maintained by SIL International?

Found here: ( http://www.sil.org/computIng/toolbox/ )

My main questions are pretty simple, but unfortunately are not covered in the overly simplistic tutorial PDF available for download from the same site; mainly I'm concerned with the elusiveness (or complete lack) of an "Import" function - I'm essentially wondering if there *is* one.

I'm asking because I'm a student working for a professor of mine, compiling grammatical data and sifting through field notes of the Yanomae and Yanam languages (from the Amazon), using Toolbox to piece together a coherent database. An Import function would enable me to organize the data I've got (over 500 pages of notes) into a spreadsheet and digitize it far more efficiently than if I am forced to manually enter each term and the various bits of information attached to it.

Any enlightenment on this subject would be greatly appreciated; suggestions for alternate programs are always welcome, too.

Thanks!

- Goose

Hi Goose,
the import functions that you just open a file. There is no separate import function and I doubt that it is useful for your data unless it is already in txt format. then you could import it as a txt file and copy paste each entry. Still lots of work though.
In the follow up programme Flex (Field language explorer) has an import function, but only for already configured dictionaries.
Well you might be done by now anyway. SIL ppl are very nice and helpful if you email them to ask for help.
Your works sounds cool, Amazonian languages are sure interesting!
Cheers,
